Increasing internet use eats television impact

14 Jan 2010

Is web video slowly eating away international television audiences ? With niche content being available 24/7 online, it looks like the linear broadcasting industry is declining due to online movies.

The European research institute CIM has just published a new study, backed by another research project by Digimeter. Both reports confirm that young people's use of the television set in decreasing. And when they watch, they have a more selective attitude. Meaning they only watch what they really want to see. That's a change in comparison to the previous generations, who have a tendency to watch TV as a habit. Young people simply use the web for their information and for their entertainment.
The web is the platform. TV is just going to be a part of it. A large number of stations use their website to broadcast. France24, the French news channel , reaches their audience through a web browser and through their iPhone application. BBC and CNN are also live online.
So knowing that young people are more selective...and knowing that the web is the new distribution channel...we can imagine what the whole broadcasting culture is going to look like, let's say in a decade. The web will only grow in accessibility. We (first generation internet users and creators ) had a tendency to associate the web to computers. But we've moved on. It's on our mobile phones, our smartphones and mobile devices. And the trend is not going away of course. Computers are about to change fundamentally in general. Do a YouTube search for "iSlate" and "Tablet PC" and you will see that television, magazines and the web have started to merge into a new media form.
So broadcasting, in other words, is no longer the exclusive privilege of the stations. Anyone who's online can find ways to broadcast. Companies can use their website or their applications for mobile devices, and be online. Even live. They can obtain real time search results. Search engines like google keep improving their robots to find fresh content. So 2010 is the year for tablet pcs and macs. And for real time search. Jee, are we looking forward to all of that.
